In total, the United States currently has 14 trade agreements with 20 different countries. The world has achieved almost more free trade in the next round, known as the Doha Agreement. If successful, Doha would have reduced tariffs for all WTO members overall. The United States has another multilateral regional trade agreement: the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). This agreement with Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua eliminated tariffs on more than 80% of U.S. exports of non-textile goods. Reciprocity is a necessary feature of any agreement. If each required party does not win by the agreement as a whole, there is no incentive to approve it. If an agreement is reached, it can be assumed that each contracting party expects to win at least as much as it loses.
For example, Country A, in exchange for removing barriers to country B products, which benefit A consumers and B producers, will insist that Country B reduce barriers to country A products and thus benefit country A producers and perhaps B consumers. A conclusion drawn from the data is obvious. The Americans suffered when China`s retaliation devastated U.S. exports. Trump`s rate hikes have increased prices for U.S. consumers and costs for U.S. businesses. His politically motivated buying commitments may have caused more problems than they solved. After the election, the United States needs a new approach to solving its trade problems with China.
A trade agreement signed between more than two parties (usually neighbouring or in the same region) is considered multilateral. They face the main obstacles — to content negotiation and implementation. The more countries involved, the more difficult it is to achieve mutual satisfaction. Once this type of trade agreement is governed, it will become a very powerful agreement. The larger the GDP of the signatories, the greater the impact on other global trade relations. The largest multilateral trade agreement is the North American Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico.  However, the WTO has expressed some concerns. According to Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the WTO, the dissemination of regional trade agreements (RTA) is «… is the concern of inconsistency, confusion, exponentially increasing costs for businesses, unpredictability and even injustice in trade relations.  The WTO is how typical trade agreements (called preferential or regional agreements by the WTO) are to some extent useful, but it is much more advantageous to focus on global agreements under the WTO, such as the ongoing Doha Round negotiations.
